American Network of Health Promoting Universities is an
outgrowth of a partnership begun in 1994 between CenterNet and the
Association of Academic Health Centers (AHC). CenterNet has delivered
over 170 hours of programs to health care professionals nationwide,
became an online provider of NIH CME/CE accreditation/certification, and
since 2001 has expanded its focus to patients and the general
population. Advances in Diabetes Care (ADC) began in 2001 as small
patient education seminars at Morehouse School of Medicine, University
of Michigan Health System, and two non-AHC institutions in Boston (New
England Medical Center and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy). The
program has developed into a recognized community education model
providing up-to-date chronic disease information to patients and primary
care physicians.
The goal of AHC’s American Network of Health Promoting
Universities (ANHPU)* is to enhance the role of academic leaders and
expand the contributions of academic institutions in health promotion.
This initiative puts to use the leadership, reputation, and clinical
expertise of AHC member institutions to provide community-based health
promotion and disease prevention educational services. To paraphrase Dr.
James Gavin, president of the Morehouse School of Medicine, “Centers of
discovery have a responsibility to be centers of community education.”
